Rosa Luxemburg Foundation Berlin
Aureli’s words pointed out the friction between feeling involved with political institutions and the distance that we, as citizens, usually experience. As he described in his text it all starts in the place where the function takes place.
Not having access to these buildings, means not feeling part of the process which ultimately leads to political detachment.
With the new building of Rosa Luxemburg Foundation (RLS) we would like to tackle this problem. Political disengagement is not a trivial thing and certainly cannot be resolved only with a new building design.
Nonetheless it is possible to resolve or mitigate this cause of disengagement derived from the above mentioned point by Mr. Aureli.
The new RLS should express an open character, it should promote debate. It should invite people to access the building and participate in their activities.
Besides that it should also work in the same way for the staff members and encourage collaboration among different departments. By all means isolated departments should be avoided.
Urban setting | The new RLS is situated on a very interesting location. On one hand it defines a new public square together with the “Historisher Postbanhof” and the Hotel am Postbanhof and on the other hand it faces Straße der Pariser Kommune from which a large amount of visitors will arrive (train station, parking, traffic road).
Public plinth | In order to give an answer to this publicly exposed situation, a transparent plinth with a variety of public functions is positioned on ground floor. The main access of RLS is located at the Stadtplatz. The foyer is the departure area for the “public promenade” and moreover it has a large multifunctional space which can hold exhibitions, cafe, receptions, etc. In summer time it is possible to open its facade towards the square.
